R G FALLA PRIMARY SCHOOLS OUTREACH HOCKEY TOURNAMENT - 2012

On Friday afternoon 18th May, ten teams from nine Bailiwick Primary schools met at Footes Lane to play a 7 a-side mini hockey tournament. Two pools of five teams played a set of round robin matches with the winner of each pool earning themselves a place in the Final……. or that was the organisers plan, which was turned on its head by the teams!

On pitch one defending champions, Sark School, were pitted against LMDC 1, Hautes Capelles, Vale and St Martin’s and on pitch two the second team from LMDC battled against Melrose, Forest, St Mary & St Michael and Beechwood. The rules had been tweaked slightly as no team fielded a kitted up goalkeeper, so instead of penalty corners, teams were awarded a free shot on goal.

After some very close matches Beechwood edged ahead as winners of pitch 2 having won against LMDC, ST M & ST M and being held to a draw by Melrose. However on pitch 1, for the first time ever, two teams, St Martin’s & Sark, finished the pool matches on the same number of points, with the same goal difference and same number of ‘goals for’. Even the result of the match between the two teams was a draw! So the winner of this pool had to be decided by a penalty shot on goal. Even this went down to the wire with Sark having to score with the last shot to become the pool winners.

So Sark & Beechwood faced each other in the Final. This turned out to be a very evenly matched game with both sides pressing forward and having their attacks thwarted by some very good defensive work on both sides. At the end of time the result was 0-0 so five minutes of extra time was played. This failed to produce a golden goal, so both Sark & Beechwood were declared joint winners by R G Falla representative Mike Wagstaff who presented both teams with medals and the trophy.
