Les Bourgs Hospice Patron Impressed on Final Visit

Hospice Patron Lt-Governor Sir Fabian Malbon was delighted to see the progress on the Les Bourgs rebuild on his last visit before leaving the island.

Hospice stakeholders and Sir Fabian and Lady Malbon were given a tour of the site which is more than half way through the build phase.

Sir Fabian said the hospital had come on in leaps and bounds 'It's such and incredibly clever design - it will be an absolute gem when it is finished,' he said.

'It's essential that people keep up their efforts to raise the remaining money.' He said he was sad that he could not be there to see its opening.

'But my successor will be coming to look at it,' he said. 'When we come back this site will be a running hospice so it will really be worth a visit and nice to come and see'. It's going to be such an asset to this island.' Les Bourgs director of nursing Jo Boyd said the project had gone very well. 'I've been working with the architects from the start to make sure the building design fits its purpose.' she said. 'it's been one of the best but hardest parts of my career - I'm looking forward to showing it to the staff.

'As soon as everything is fit and safe to dos so we'll be looking to hold open days for the public so they can come and see what's been happening.'

At the end of last year Les Bourgs announced it needed £2.9m. to finish the project, with the Guernsey Press as media partner for the campaign. Mrs Boyd added it was vital that the appeal for cash continued. 'We'll be looking to raise money any way we can'. she said. 'Most of us hope we will never need to use a hospice, but if we do we want it to be the best place it can be. 'This project is for the Bailiwick'.

Project manager Paul Mason said the construction would be finished in September. Hopefully we'll see patients moving in at the end of September too - I know they are keen to', he said. 'I feel honoured to be involved in another charitable project' 'Whenever you do something like this it always gives you a special feeling.
